National Rifle Association Basic Pistol Shooting Course
This course is intended for all adults despite prior experience or affiliation.
The NRA offers two approaches of taking this course. One is the e-learning method. Students can take the course on the internet through a NRA portal on the NRA website. Then students must find an instructor. The course is reviewed with the instructor. After that, the shooting part of the course is completed with the instructor. The other method is the instructor-led course. This course is taught by an NRA Certified Instructor in a classroom setting and then practical shooting qualifications are done.
Once the student has enrolled in the online course, you create a personal identification number (PIN). When you successfully finish the course, printing your certificate will trigger that PIN. The activated PIN lets you register for the instructor-led training part of the course. Go to firearmtraining.nra.org, select student courses. Find the appropriate course and then click find a course near you, select NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting and search.
During the instructor-led training part of the course, an NRA certified instructor will confirm comprehension of gun safety rules. They will make certain the application of these rules. They will also review the range code of behavior, proper handling, and loading and unloading safety procedures. Additionally, they will assess the studentโs ability to apply the pistol shooting fundamentals and find stable shooting positions. The course includes live fire and a final shooting qualification. Students do not have to have a firearm or ammunition to join this course. If need be, American Firearms Instruction can supply firearms and ammunition. We prefer that students use their own firearms since they are used to them.
There is no guarantee of a seat in a class until payment and registration have been verified by us. Once payment and registration have been completed and verified, then and only then will your seat be guaranteed. This policy is for all prospective students. No exceptions will be made.
Students must attend the classroom part of the course before being allowed to attend the range session. PRIOR REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. NO WALK-INS ALLOWED.

Exciting news, we are now set up to offer the New Jersey Concealed Carry Qualifications for students. The New Jersey State Police have certified us as instructors. Before taking the qualification course, students must show proof of completion of a Firearms Safety Course. This could be the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course-Instructor Led Only. The course must have been taken within the last five years. We will not admit students who do not have a Firearms Safety Course that includes a firing qualification.(Military or Retired Military Identification will be accepted as satisfying this necessity.) The course is similar to the requirements that our Law Enforcement must go through. The entire course includes a shooting qualification. Each student must score 40 out of 50 rounds striking the target. This course of fire consists of strings of shooting from the 3-yard line all the way out to 15 yards. Each student must score a minimum of 40 out of 50 for our instructors to sign off on the qualification. Students are also required to qualify to fire the course using the holsters that they intend to conceal carry with. The target consists of the outline of a human body with a “Q” in the center. This type of target is referred to as the “FBI Q Target.” Students must bring each firearm they intend to conceal carry. They also need 50 rounds of ammunition for each firearm. Students will be expected to complete the fire qualification course. Each student has one chance to qualify with us. If the student does not pass the qualification, you will not get a refund. You must re-take the course to get your qualification. All students are required to provide a copy of their Firearms Identification Card. For our Out of State students, they must submit a copy of their State Concealed Carry Permit. They also need to provide a copy of their Driver’s License. Student are required by New Jersey State Law to qualify with all firearms that they intend to carry. This requirement includes every re-qualification. Students can’t use a firearm that they do not intend on carrying under their Concealed Carry Permit. Students must also show proficiency with the holster and magazines that they intend to conceal carry. This includes demonstrating the ability to exchange magazines during the course of fire. There is no time limit during the course of fire.
The other requirement to pass the Concealed Carry Permit Qualification is to take a Use of Force class. This class consists of about a half hour lecture. The lecture focuses on the Use of Force guidelines as directed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. With this course, students will get a printed copy of our PowerPoint presentation. They will also get the Use of Force guidelines as directed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. Once satisfying these requirements, then the students will obtain the required forms signed by the instructor. We will also keep a record of each qualification record.
NEW JERSEY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT RENEWALS:
Under New Jersey Statute 2C:58-4, all New Jersey Concealed Carry Permit Renewals must include a firing qualification. The entire course consists of a shooting qualification. Each student must score 40 out of 50 rounds by striking the target. This course of fire consists of strings of shooting from the 3-yard line all the way out to 15 yards. Each student must score a least of 40 out of 50 for our instructors to sign off on the qualification. Students are also required to qualify to fire the course using the holsters that they intend to conceal carry with.โThe target consists of the outline of a human body with a “Q” in the center. This type of target is referred to as the “FBI Q Target.” New Jersey Statutes Annotated 2C:58-4(a) states “2C:58-4. a. Scope and duration of authority. Anyone who holds a valid permit to carry a handgun issued under this section is authorized to carry the firearm. This permit is valid for carrying a handgun. This must be done in a holster. The handgun must be concealed on their person in all parts of this State. This excludes areas prohibited by subsection e. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 and section 7 of P.L.2022, c.131 (C.2C:58-4.6). One permit is enough for all handguns owned by the holder. But, it applies only to a handgun carried by the actual and legal holder of the permit. Exceptions are provided in subsection b. of section 6 of P.L.2022, c.131 (C.2C:58-4.5). The holder is not authorized to carry a handgun openly. However, brief and incidental exposure of a handgun is allowed while transferring it to or from a holster. It is also allowed if due to the shifting of the person’s body position or clothing. Such an exposure shall be deemed a de minimis infraction within the contemplation of N.J.S.2C:2-11.
All permits to carry handguns shall expire two years from the date of issuance. For an employee of an armored car company, permits shall expire when employment with the company is terminated. This applies if termination occurs earlier. Permits may thereafter be renewed every two years. They must be renewed in the same manner. The renewal is dependent on the same conditions as in the case of original applications. (https://law.justia.com/codes/new-jersey/title-2c/section-2c-58-4/.) This statute applies to all our students who are renewing their New Jersey Concealed Carry Permit with us. If anyone has any questions or concerns about the re-qualifications, please feel free to contact us at your convenience.
Skills Learned:
Each student will demonstrate to the instructor their ability to safely finish the qualification course. They must accurately finish the course. Students need to reach a minimum score of 40 rounds inside the outline of the “Q Target” for the qualification. Students will demonstrate drawing safely. They will do this accurately from a concealed carry holster sized for their firearm. Students must qualify using the holster that they will be carrying their firearm concealed. Students will learn the Attorney General’s guidelines regarding the Use of Force. They will get a printout of the PowerPoint presentation. They will also get the New Jersey Attorney General’s guidelines about Use of Force. Upon completion of the qualification course and the classroom instruction, the student must pass a written test scoring 100 percent. Then the instructor will fill out a copy of the New Jersey Private Citizen Certification Training record. The student will submit this document with their concealed carry permit application to the Municipal Police Department/New Jersey State Police.
