NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home

The NRA Basic Personal Protection in The Home Course teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude required for the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and loved ones, and provides information on the law-abiding individualโ€™s right to self-defense.

This course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state or local law in the state for which the course is taught, and experienced shooters (shooters able to demonstrate proficiency in the basic skills of safe gun handling, grouping, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning/care of the firearm). Prospective students must demonstrate that they have the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes by meeting one of the following: an NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification. The student may elect to pass the Pre-Course Assessment.

This course is at least eight hours long and is conducted both in a classroom and at a range under the guidance and supervision of an NRA Certified instructor. Students will be required to fire approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will be instructed on basic defensive shooting skills; strategies to protect your home safety and respond to a violent confrontation; firearms and the law in the state-specific for where the course is held; how to choose a handgun best suited for self-defense; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

The last lesson of this course: Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense; is instructed by an attorney licensed to practice law within the state in which this course is given and who is familiar with this specific area of the law; or a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) who is certified to instruct at an intermediate or higher Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificate granted within the state; or an Instructor who is certified to instruct in this area of the law by the state in which this course is presented. NRA certified instructors may conduct this lesson only if they meet the requirements stated above, and then only in their capacity as an attorney or other state-certified individual, not in their capacity as an NRA certified instructor.

NRA Basic Rifle Shooting:

The NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course teaches students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude required for the safe use of a rifle while shooting. This course is at least eight hours long and is conducted both in a classroom and at a range under the guidance and supervision of an NRA Certified instructor. This course is intended for all adults notwithstanding previous experience or affiliation.

For participating in the course, students receive the NRA Basics of Rifle Shooting Handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Booklet, take a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination, and receive a successful course completion certificate.

Skills Learned

Some of the topics covered in this course include NRAโ€™s firearm safety rules, proper use and operation of rifles, rifle parts and the operation of those parts, ammunition knowledge/selection, fundamentals of shooting, and the proper inspection and maintenance of your rifle, instructional shooting from the bench rest, prone, sitting and kneeling positions and will be afforded continued practice for skill development.

The NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course teaches students the basic knowledge, skills and attitude required for the safe use of a shotgun while shooting at a moving target. This course is at least ten hours long and is conducted both in a classroom and at a range under the guidance and supervision of an NRA Certified instructor. This course is intended for all adults notwithstanding previous experience or affiliation.

For participating in the course, students receive the NRA Basics of Shotgun Shooting Handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Booklet, take a Basics of Shotgun Shooting Student Examination, and receive a successful course completion certificate.

Skills Learned
