NEW JERSEY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT

NEW JERSEY CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT

The other requirement to pass the Concealed Carry Permit Qualification is to take a Use of Force class. This class consists of about a half hour lecture. The lecture focuses on the Use of Force guidelines as directed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. With this course, students will get a printed copy of our PowerPoint presentation. They will also get the Use of Force guidelines as directed by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. Once satisfying these requirements, then the students will obtain the required forms signed by the instructor. We will also keep a record of each qualification record.

Under New Jersey Statute 2C:58-4, all New Jersey Concealed Carry Permit Renewals must include a firing qualification. The entire course consists of a shooting qualification. Each student must score 40 out of 50 rounds by striking the target. This course of fire consists of strings of shooting from the 3-yard line all the way out to 15 yards. Each student must score a least of 40 out of 50 for our instructors to sign off on the qualification. Students are also required to qualify to fire the course using the holsters that they intend to conceal carry with. The target consists of the outline of a human body with a “Q” in the center. This type of target is referred to as the “FBI Q Target.” New Jersey Statutes Annotated 2C:58-4(a) states “2C:58-4. a. Scope and duration of authority. Anyone who holds a valid permit to carry a handgun issued under this section is authorized to carry the firearm. This permit is valid for carrying a handgun. This must be done in a holster. The handgun must be concealed on their person in all parts of this State. This excludes areas prohibited by subsection e. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 and section 7 of P.L.2022, c.131 (C.2C:58-4.6). One permit is enough for all handguns owned by the holder. But, it applies only to a handgun carried by the actual and legal holder of the permit. Exceptions are provided in subsection b. of section 6 of P.L.2022, c.131 (C.2C:58-4.5). The holder is not authorized to carry a handgun openly. However, brief and incidental exposure of a handgun is allowed while transferring it to or from a holster. It is also allowed if due to the shifting of the person’s body position or clothing. Such an exposure shall be deemed a de minimis infraction within the contemplation of N.J.S.2C:2-11.

All permits to carry handguns shall expire two years from the date of issuance. For an employee of an armored car company, permits shall expire when employment with the company is terminated. This applies if termination occurs earlier. Permits may thereafter be renewed every two years. They must be renewed in the same manner. The renewal is dependent on the same conditions as in the case of original applications. (https://law.justia.com/codes/new-jersey/title-2c/section-2c-58-4/.) This statute applies to all our students who are renewing their New Jersey Concealed Carry Permit with us. If anyone has any questions or concerns about the re-qualifications, please feel free to contact us at your convenience.

Skills Learned:

Each student will demonstrate to the instructor their ability to safely finish the qualification course. They must accurately finish the course. Students need to reach a minimum score of 40 rounds inside the outline of the “Q Target” for the qualification. Students will demonstrate drawing safely. They will do this accurately from a concealed carry holster sized for their firearm. Students must qualify using the holster that they will be carrying their firearm concealed. Students will learn the Attorney General’s guidelines regarding the Use of Force. They will get a printout of the PowerPoint presentation. They will also get the New Jersey Attorney General’s guidelines about Use of Force. Upon completion of the qualification course and the classroom instruction, the student must pass a written test scoring 100 percent. Then the instructor will fill out a copy of the New Jersey Private Citizen Certification Training record. The student will submit this document with their concealed carry permit application to the Municipal Police Department/New Jersey State Police.

DISCLAIMER: American Firearms Instruction LLC can’t be held liable or responsible for any changes. These changes might occur after a student finishes any training or qualifications used in your applications. The above listed information shows the generally accepted qualification requirements. These are directed by the New Jersey State Police and the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.

New Jersey Concealed Carry Permit is not generally recommended for beginner shooters. All students are required to be proficient with their firearm and drawing from a holster. American Firearms Instruction LLC does not teach drawing from a holster for this course. We will spend about 15 minutes on drawing from a holster refresher. This is not to be construed as drawing from a holster training. The instructor has the discretion to assess safety. Any student who is unsafe while drawing from a holster will not be allowed to continue. As stated above, this course is pass or fail.

Any student who fails the course due to unsafe practices will be required to pay again. Failure due to holster draw or poor marksmanship also necessitates paying again. You will need to retake the course.

First-Time Gun Owner?

The 10 Safety Habits That Prevent Accidents (Plus a Simple Practice Plan)

At American Firearms Instruction (AFI), we work with a lot of first-time gun owners. The people who do best aren’t “naturals,” they’re the ones who build good habits early and practice them the right way.

This isn’t paranoia, it’s a mindset that prevents complacency. The moment someone assumes “it’s unloaded,” they tend to get sloppy.

Habit to build: Every time you handle a firearm, do a proper safety check (and do it the same way every time).

Most negligent discharges come down to this. Your finger should rest high on the frame—not “hovering near” the trigger.

Habit to build: Touch the trigger only after your sights are on target and you’ve made the decision to shoot.

This is the rule people “know,” but don’t always follow, especially during administrative handling, cleaning, or showing a friend.

Habit to build: Be intentional about where the muzzle is at all times, even when you’re “just moving it for a second.”

Walls, doors, and furniture don’t reliably stop bullets. In a home setting, “safe direction” matters more than most new owners realize.

Habit to build: Think through safe directions in your home before you ever need them.

Safe storage isn’t just about kids, it’s about preventing unauthorized access, theft, and accidents.

A good storage plan answers:

  • Where does it live when not in use?
  • Who can access it?
  • How fast do I need access in an emergency?
  • How will I store ammo?

A lot of new owners unintentionally mix training behaviors with defensive behaviors. That creates confusion under stress.

Habit to build: Train with purpose. If you’re practicing handling, do it in a controlled, structured way (ideally with coaching).

Different firearms behave differently. Controls, safeties, loading/unloading steps, and failure points aren’t universal.

Habit to build: Master loading, unloading, and verifying clear, smoothly, consistently, and without rushing.

Even responsible people can get in trouble if they rely on vague advice.

Habit to build: Get clarity on transport, carry rules, storage expectations, and use-of-force basics for your area.

You can learn a lot online, but videos can’t correct your grip, trigger press, muzzle discipline, or unsafe habits you don’t realize you have.

Habit to build: Get at least one structured class early. It saves time, money, and frustration.

You don’t need to train every day. You need a plan that’s realistic.

A simple 3-step practice plan (beginner-friendly)

Once per week (10–20 minutes):

  1. Dry practice (with safety checks and no ammo in the room):** grip, stance, trigger press
  2. Handling reps: safe loading/unloading procedure (as taught for your firearm)
  3. Decision-making: “What’s my safe direction? Where’s my storage? What’s my plan?”

Consistency beats intensity—every time.
